Project Abstract: Isle Royale National Park (ISRO), a remote island archipelago in Lake Superior, is a water-based park (75% of park acreage), with 99% of its land base as designated federal wilderness. The park is also a U.S. biosphere reserve. As a temperate/boreal forest ecotone, the park’s water resources are especially responsive to anthropogenic stresses. The level of protection provided by geography and legal mandates coupled by its environmental sensitivity as an ecotone makes ISRO a unique reserve in the lower 48 states. The recently completed GMP points to the water resources as part of the park’s national significance, and called for the development of a Water Resources Management Plan (WRMP). This proposal seeks funding to complete a WRMP plan through cooperative efforts of local, regional, and national expertise, and is a first step in the protection and conservation of ISRO’s water resources.
