| Project Abstract: |
Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area (BICA) staff evaluated known collections as required by National American Graves Protection and Reputation Act (NAGPRA) in the 1990's and to date has not identified cultural items subject to NAGPRA in its custody or possession. However, recent collections management activities by NPS staff resulted in the identification of potential NAGPRA materials contained within archeological collections collected in the 1960's and 1970's and currently in the care of BICA. In addition to verifying the NAGPRA status of these items through research and government-to-government consultation with potentially affiliated tribes, this project will address outstanding questions regarding the ownership of the collections based upon the land ownership status of the sites from which they were removed and NPS management responsibility. Consultations with potentially affiliated tribes will also establish a dialogue for future NAGPRA compliance activities related to inadvertent discoveries and intentional excavations. |
