Project Abstract:

Michigan State University, working as a cooperator with the NPS Social Science Program has created the Money Generation Model 2 (MGM2), a significant upgrade of the original NPS Money Generation Model for estimating economic impacts of park visitor spending on regions around NPS units. The MGM2 spreadsheet application provides a framework and databases for estimating sales, income, and jobs resulting from a given number and mix of park visitors. The MGM2 was completed in 2000 and initial training, outreach, and reporting based on the model have been done. A number of park-specific reports have been prepared in addition to the System-wide report for 2001: Economic Impacts of National Park Visitor Spending on Gateway Communities: System-wide Estimates for 2001. The MGM2 was revised in 2002, incorporating price indices, spending profiles, and multipliers as they became available.

The cooperator will revise the current Money Generation Model (MGM2) to include economic impacts of NPS Operations and Maintenance (O&M) activities on local communities; create MGM2 reporting capabilities by congressional districts and by Federal Fiscal Year (FY); create System-wide reports using data through FY 2003 and Calendar Year 2003; incorporate updated price indices from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), visitor counts from the NPS Public Use Statistics Office (PUSO), and park spending data from the NPS Visitor Services Project (VSP) as available; and prepare up to ten park-specific economic impact reports.

The research will update systemwide estimates of the economic impacts of national parks on local economies for FY 2006. MGM2 model spending profiles and multipliers will be updated. Estimates of direct and secondary economics impacts of visitor spending and park payrolls will be estimated for all parks based on FY 2006 recreation visits and payroll data. Detailed impact reports will be completed for four parks conducting VSP studies in 2005 or 2006.
