Development of Local Scale Dispersion Models for Short-Term Prediction of Smoke Dispersion from Prescribed and Wildland Fires

| Project Abstract: |
The overall goal of this study is to build new and improved numerical models and decision support system to predict the short-term and short-range impacts of smoke from small area prescribed burns in the North Central and Northeastern United States. Specifically, the tools to be developed will enable land managers or small land owners to make burn or no-burn decisions based on the predicted potential impact of smoke on the surrounding environments or nearby communities.This research and product development will provide additional air quality modeling capability to USDA Forest Service’s Eastern Area Modeling Consortium (EAMC) to fulfill key research and product development objectives for EAMC and for the Ecological and Environmental Fire Science portfolio of the national Wildland Fire and Fuels Research and Development Strategic Plan. The predictive models developed in this study will help with the management of wildland and prescribed fires, improve our understanding of interactions between fires and local air quality, and provide practical and effective tools for assessing compliance with the objectives of the Clean Air Act. This research will also contribute to the fire and air pollution research program elements within the Department of Geography at Michigan State University. |
