Project Abstract: Coal Creek is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is located within Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve (YUCH), Alaska. The district contains a rich and largely intact record of twentieth century industrial mining activities in the form of buildings, tools and machinery, tailings piles, a water control system, and roads. YUCH managers are charged with caring for and sharing information about the Coal Creek Historic District, however its extensive facilities and features have never been mapped and many have not been fully documented. Such documentation is a prerequisite for managing this resource and is the focus of this project. YUCH will cooperate with the Industrial Archaeology program at Michigan Technological Institute (MTU), which has expertise in documenting the physical remains of historic industry. A joint MTU-YUCH crew will conduct fieldwork in 2004 to comprehensively map and describe facilities and features at Coal Creek. MTU will later synthesize this data into a Geographic Information System (GIS), which will describe and locate structures, features, and artifacts, and link historic maps and photographs. The GIS will be a valuable tool for YUCH resource managers and can serve as the basis for interpretive products such as web pages or displays. The project also furthers educational goals since it will serve as a thesis project for an MTU graduate student who will use the project report and GIS to fulfill M.A. thesis requirements.
