| Project Abstract: |
The Southwest Alaska Network (SWAN) of the National Park Service is participating in a service-wide effort to collect scientifically sound information to assess status and monitor long-term trends of key natural resources in national parks. SWAN scoping workshops attended by technical experts and resource managers identified moose as an essential resource or "vital sign" that should be monitored within four National Park units in SWAN. Protocol narratives and standard operating procedures (SOPs) are critical components of Quality Assurance to ensure the monitoring designed for moose meets standards of quality for scientifically defensible results. A review of existing survey and monitoring protocols indicated a modified version of Gasaway et al.'s (1986) ariel survey method to be the most effective and feasible approach to estimating abundance, distribution, and/or sex-age composition of moose in the four park units. |
