PROJECT IS COMPLETE

Project Abstract: In cooperation with Joshua Tree National Park (JOTR), Dr. Martin and members from his program will intensively document and inventory the diverse artifact assemblages in the cultural landscape of the Keys Ranch. By combining previous research, conducting additional archival research within the park's museum collections, and interviewing family members, the project will provide the first comprehensive documentation of the eclectic mining machinery and homesteading object assemblages within the historic landscape. Photographic and special data will be gathered; individual objects or assemblages of similar objects will be analyzed by type in situ and mapped into a format for use by park managers. The resulting product of the project will provide framework for inventory management of the objects, preservation assessments, individual object interpretive information, and potential for a web-based interpretive program. Additionally, the information from this project will assist the park with management decision making on the preservation priorities concerning the landscape and objects.
