Project Abstract: With the identification of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in Wisconsin in 2002, there has been a great deal of scientific and public interest directed toward understanding both the biology of the disease, and its potential effect on deer populations and hunting traditions. Eleven states besides Wisconsin have found CWD, and this has led to a call for information on the disease to be collected on a national level and made accessible for research and reference. The National Biological Information Infrastructure's (NBII) Wildlife Disease Information Node (WDIN), housed at the USGS National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC), has been identified as the agency that will collect, organize and distribute existing CWD information and coordinate integration of new data as it becomes available. This effort will require the combined efforts of personnel in information science, database design, web content design and programming, and hardware/software management. The NWHC would like to develop a partnership with the UW School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) to enhance its abilities to meet this goal and provide comprehensive and timely information for resource managers.
